Adjudicators for Diverse-Redundant Components

چکیده
In fault-tolerant components reaIized using replication, severai alternate results are produce d, from which a single correct result must be derived. This is done by a mechanism, that we call an adjudicator Ca concept more generaI than a voter), which uses as its inputs the individuaI results produced by the replicated subcomponents comprising the redundant component. This paper gives a rigourous definition of the adjudication problem, summarizes the existing literature on the topic, and investigates the use ofprobabilistic knowIedge about errors/faults in the subcomponents of a fault tolerant component to obtain good adjudication functions. The concept of an optimal adjudicator is introduced and discussed. Release number Release status A vailability status A vailable from 1 Final Public Felicita Di Giandomenico, lEI-CNR, Via S. Developing a method for reliability allocation of series-parallel systems by considering common cause failure
Reliability allocation has an essential connection to design for reliability and is an important activity in the product design and development process. In determining the reliability of subsystems or components on the basis of goal reliability, attention must be paid to failure effect, failure information, and improvement opportunities based upon real potentials for reliability improvement. In...
متن کاملAn Empirical Study of the Effectiveness of "Forcing" Diversity Based on a Large Population of Diverse Programs
Use of diverse software components is a viable defence against common-mode failures in redundant softwarebased systems. Various forms of "Diversity-Seeking Decisions" (“DSDs”) can be applied to the process of developing, or procuring, redundant components, to improve the chances of the resulting components not failing on the same demands. An open question is how effective these decisions, and t...
متن کاملOptimal Discretion in the Application of Rules
Discretion is examined as a feature of the design of rule-guided systems. That is, given that rules have to be administered by some group of persons, called adjudicators, and given that their goals may be different from society’s (or a relevant organization’s), when is it socially desirable to allocate discretionary authority to the adjudicators and, if so, to what extent? The answer reflects a...
متن کاملClinical adjudication in acute kidney injury studies: findings from the pivotal TIMP-2*IGFBP7 biomarker study
BACKGROUND The NEPROCHECK test (Astute Medical, San Diego, CA, USA) combines urinary tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-2 (TIMP-2) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) to identify patients at high risk for acute kidney injury (AKI). In a US Food and Drug Administration registration trial (NCT01573962), AKI was determined by a three-member clinical adjudication committee...
متن کاملMTBF evaluation for 2-out-of-3 redundant repairable systems with common cause and cascade failures considering fuzzy rates for failures and repair: a case study of a centrifugal water pumping system
In many cases, redundant systems are beset by both independent and dependent failures. Ignoring dependent variables in MTBF evaluation of redundant systems hastens the occurrence of failure, causing it to take place before the expected time, hence decreasing safety and creating irreversible damages. Common cause failure (CCF) and cascading failure are two varieties of dependent failures, both l...
